Do dogs need shampoo in the first place?

Many breeds of dogs appear to have a well-dressed coat without any special care. Do dogs need shampoo in the first place?

Dogs don't sweat much, but their coat gets dirty, so regular shampoo is needed.

Dogs rarely sweat like humans, and the only one that sweats is the paws. If you don't sweat, your coat won't get dirty. That's not the case.
When I go out for a walk every day, dirt and dust will inevitably stick to my body. Also, even if you stay indoors for a long time, depending on the situation, house dust and small stains may be attached. In some cases, fleas and ticks may be lurking.

Alternatively, dog sebum covers the surface of the skin and keeps it moisturized, but if more sebum is secreted than necessary, sebum stains will accumulate at the roots of the hair, making the entire coat sticky. It will be.
In addition, excrement will adhere to the coat, and if the coat around the face is long, the hood and eyes will stick to the coat, leaving dirt.

If left unshampooed, odors may accumulate.

Some dogs have a peculiar body odor. Some dog breeds have a strong body odor due to their characteristics such as a large amount of sebum secretion, many wrinkles on the face and skin, and a double coat of hair. In some cases, germs on the skin may give off an odor. Depending on the dog, the odor will accumulate if left unshampooed, although to varying degrees.

For that reason, dogs also need regular shampoo.
It's a sign that you need shampoo, not only when the dirt is noticeable, but also when you feel moist when you touch your hair or when you are worried about body odor.

What are the possible problems of neglecting shampoo?

What kind of troubles can occur if the dog is not shampooed? Here are some typical ones.

It may cause itching, skin diseases and poor physical condition.

Itching occurs when the skin cannot be kept clean and old and excess sebum and dead skin cells remain. In addition, bacteria can multiply from there and cause skin diseases, and fleas and ticks can infest and cause itching, which can lead to bacterial growth.
For children with allergies, allergens may remain on their coats and skin, causing them to feel unwell.

Not only dogs, but also owners can have trouble.

The negative effects of neglecting shampoo are not just for dogs. During the pollen season, pollen may adhere to the body of a dog that goes out for a walk and bring it into the house as it is. If you have people with hay fever in your house, your symptoms may get worse.
After all, both dogs and human owners need a decent shampoo.

When should I start shampooing my puppy?

Newborn puppies have low immunity and cannot control their body temperature well. If you shampoo at such times, you may get a cold or illness. Therefore, it is said that the best time to take a puppy in the bath is about two weeks after the vaccine received around the age of two months.

However, this is just a guide, and puppies at this time are not strong enough. Carefully look at the child's physical condition and condition to see if he or she can shampoo.
Once you get used to the bath, shampooing once or twice a month should be sufficient.

If your body or coat gets dirty due to excrement sticking to your buttocks when you can't shampoo, gently wipe it off with a wet wipe or a warm wet towel. If the dirt cannot be cleaned by all means, take measures such as washing only the buttocks with hot water.

How to shampoo a puppy

How do I shampoo my puppy? We'll show you how to shampoo your puppy, along with what to prepare.

1. Brush and prepare

Before shampooing, brush and prepare your puppy's entire body. There are various types of brushes such as slicker brushes, rubber brushes, combs, and pin brushes, but you can choose according to the breed of dog and the length of the coat.
The trick to brushing is to remove dust from your entire body. If there are any tangled hairs, gently loosen them. By loosening the hair in advance, you can prevent the hair from hardening when it gets wet.

2. Wet your body in the shower

After brushing, wet the puppy's body in the shower. The optimum hot water temperature for puppies is around 37 ° C. Although puppies have a higher body temperature than adult dogs, the heat tends to stay in the bath, and puppies tend to rise in body temperature.

If you suddenly put hot water in the shower near your face or heart, your puppy will be surprised. Therefore, let's take a shower gently from the buttocks and feet far from the face and move to the part that gets wet little by little. At this time, it is recommended to put the shower head in close contact with the dog's body because the sound and water pressure of the shower will be reduced.

If it is difficult to get the roots of the hair wet by repelling hot water, dent the palm of your hand to collect the hot water and pour it directly into the skin to get it wet. If the skin gets wet evenly, the foaming of the shampoo after this will improve, so it is important to get it wet.

3. Wet your face with a sponge or gauze

Many children don't like getting their faces wet. Therefore, when you get your face wet, use a sponge or gauze soaked in hot water to prevent hot water from getting into your eyes, nose, and ears.
If your eyes or eyes are stuck, moisten them little by little at this point. This way, you don't have to rub it forcibly when you wash it with shampoo.

4. Wash your body with shampoo

Before starting shampoo, it is important to whisk the shampoo in advance instead of applying it to the puppy's body as it is. By lathering the shampoo firmly and finely in advance, the lather adsorbs dirt and makes it easier to lift from the skin and hair.
When whipping, it is recommended to put shampoo in the washbasin and add a small amount of hot water to whisk. You can also use a whipping ball.

When the shampoo foams enough, it's time to apply the shampoo to the puppy's body and wash it. At this time, it is a good idea to apply foam to your back, buttocks, tummy, feet, and tail, and gently wash your skin with the pad of your finger to avoid raising your nails.

5. Wash with face up

Wash your face face up so that shampoo and hot water do not flow toward your face. And finally, wash your face. Take the shampoo foam with your fingers and wash it carefully in the order of the ears, head, and around the eyes and nose so that the foam does not get into the eyes and ears.

6. Rinse the shampoo

When washing off the shampoo, start from the face. Rinse the face, back, chest, front legs, tummy, buttocks, hind legs, and tail in that order. If shampoo remains, it may cause skin problems, so wash it off thoroughly.

7. Rinse in the same way

Rinse should not be applied as it is like shampoo, but should be dissolved in hot water before use. Dissolve an appropriate amount in a washbasin and spread it evenly on the entire body except the head. Rinse thoroughly in the same way as when rinsing the shampoo.

8. Wipe off the water with a towel

After rinsing, gently squeeze the water out of your body, ears and feet. Drain your body from your back to your stomach as if you were stroking it with your hands. Also, the trick is to gently grasp the ears, feet, and tail and squeeze the water from top to bottom.
When the water has drained to a certain extent, cover your body with a large towel and gently press it to wipe off the water. If too much water remains, the dryer will take a long time, so it is important to wipe it off thoroughly.

9. Dry the hair

When you can wipe off some water from your body, finally dry it with a hair dryer.
At this time, if you bring the dryer too close, you need to be careful because the heat will damage your skin. Therefore, keep the dryer about 30 cm away from your body and dry it carefully so that the skin is not exposed to the wind.

If it is dry, it may cool your body and cause you to feel sick, or bacteria may grow and cause skin problems, so let's dry it quickly and thoroughly.
In particular, it is easy to leave the toes, between the paws, armpits, and the back of the ears dry. Please dry it while checking it by hand.

Does the frequency and method of shampoo differ depending on the breed?

As long as you are a healthy dog, the frequency and method of shampooing is basically the same for all breeds. However, be aware that this is not the case if you have any illness or if you are an old dog who is getting older and weaker.

If you dare to mention the characteristics of each dog type, it can be said that long-haired breeds tend to get dirty on their coats. Therefore, regular shampoo about once a month is essential.
On the other hand, if you have a short-haired dog with a relatively low body odor, you can keep your coat clean to some extent by simply wiping your body with a wet towel. However, puppies with good metabolism still need regular shampoo about once a month because sebum stains and old keratin accumulate.

How to break in a puppy's shampoo

Puppies are not yet accustomed to the new environment and are sensitive to first-time events, sounds and changes. Avoid suddenly shampooing such a puppy.
You may be afraid of the sound of the shower you hear for the first time and the hot water that hits your body. If you are not good at showering or shampooing when you are a puppy, you may not only dislike shampoo even when you grow up, but you may also dislike approaching the bathroom. It is important to gradually get used to water, shampoo, and bath so that the puppy is not afraid.
Here, I will explain how to get used to shampoo for puppies in order.

1. Let the puppy play in the bathroom

First of all, let's play the puppy in the bathroom. Make the puppy recognize that the bath is a playground, and imprint the image that the bath is not afraid and a safe place.

2. Get used to the sound of the shower

Let's hear the sound of the shower little by little and get used to it. After listening to the sound of the shower, you can give the puppy a treat as a reward.

3. Get used to the feeling of getting wet

Wipe the puppy's body with a towel soaked in lukewarm water. This will give you the feeling that you don't mind getting your body wet.

4. Wet the puppy from a distance from the face and get used to the shower.

Once you get used to the feeling of getting wet, it's time to get your puppy wet in the shower. Gradually moisten the puppy's back toes and hips, far from the face, to get used to the feel of the shower.

Things to keep in mind when choosing a puppy shampoo

What should I keep in mind when choosing a puppy shampoo? Here are two points that you should pay particular attention to.

Choose a dog-specific shampoo

When choosing a shampoo, be sure to choose a dog-only product. Human skin and dog skin are completely different in nature. Dog skin is only about one-fifth as thick as humans and is very delicate.
Some owners wash their dogs with human shampoo, but never do this. Shampoos made for human skin are too irritating for dogs and can cause skin problems.

Choose a hypoallergenic shampoo that is mainly composed of naturally derived ingredients

There are different types of dog shampoo. If you want to reduce skin irritation, we recommend a hypoallergenic shampoo that is mainly composed of naturally derived ingredients.
Especially for children with weak skin or skin diseases, the owner should consult with a veterinarian and choose the most suitable shampoo instead of making his own judgment.

Frequently Asked Questions
